Basic Science Research & Clinical Development
Dr. Carr served on the Medical College of Virginia faculty and the School of Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University for 20 years as a tenured professor of Medicine, Pathology, and Engineering. With special interests in diagnosing and treating thrombotic and hemorrhagic disorders, he also served as Director of the Central Virginia Coagulation Disorders Center.
He obtained a BS in physics from Davidson College and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering and Mathematics from UNC Chapel Hill. After a post-doctoral fellowship in biochemistry, he earned his MD at UNC and completed his internal medicine residency and fellowship in hematology at NC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Expertise
- Served as a Vice President for Research and Development and Clinical Development for Novo Nordisk (hematology: recombinant FVIIa – NovoSeven), Pfizer (hematology: small molecules for the treatment of sickle cell disease and gene therapy for hemophilia), Spark Therapeutics (gene therapy for Factor IX deficiency) and CSL-Behring (formed the Hematology Team and pursued gene therapy for hemophilia)
- He is a highly decorated veteran who served in the U.S. Army for 30 years, being on active duty five times and deployed overseas for three conflicts prior to retiring at the rank of COL.

- Authored more than 140 scientific articles, 190 abstracts, and 5 book chapters
- Primary or sole inventor of 15 issued and 5 pending U.S. patents.
